Top tips to help you conceive

January is the month apparently when more babies are conceived than any other month*.  So, if you’re thinking of starting a family, then you may be keen for some tips to increase your chances of getting pregnant.

According to the Office of National Statistics, more babies are born in the months of September and October proving that January is the month when they conceive.  Reasons behind this may be that people are spending less money going out and are opting instead to stay snuggled up warm indoors with their partner.

Top tips to help you conceive

  1. Get the timing right:
    There is no better way to increase your chances of pregnancy than timing intercourse with your most fertile time, so get in tune with your body to help pinpoint when you are ovulating each cycle.
  2. Give up alcohol.
    If possible, it is best to avoid drinking alcohol altogether – both while they are trying to get pregnant and for at least the first three months of pregnancy.  Alcohol usage is associated with an increased danger of miscarriage and other health risks to the baby. For men, drinking excessively can have a negative impact on the quality of sperm.
  3. If you smoke, quit now.
    Smoking can affect fertility in both men and women. Also, all women hoping to be mums would do well to avoid smoky atmospheres to limit the risk of passive smoking.
  4. Watch what you eat:
    Get into the habit of consuming nutritious and healthy home-cooked food. Aim to eat at least five portions of fruit or veg a day.
  5. Be active
    Get into the habit of exercising regularly. Walking, swimming, yoga and pilates are all good options.
  6. Take folic acid.
    Doctors recommend taking a 400 microgram supplement of folic acid every day from the time you give up contraception till the 12th week of pregnancy, as this can help prevent babies born with neural tube defects. You might also want to eat foods that are rich in folic acid, such as liver, broccoli, spinach, fortified breakfast cereals and brown rice.”
  7. Make a big fuss of your partner:
    Men can sometimes feel slightly left out when a woman is very focused on becoming a mum. Show your man how much you value him for himself – not just as a potential parent.
  8. Finally, enjoy yourself!
    Once you become a parent, life will never be the same again. So, in the meantime, have a happy time with your partner, friends and family.
