Blocked fallopian tubes

One of the most common reasons for a woman being unable to conceive is blocked fallopian tubes which prevents the egg from meeting the sperm.

Blocked fallopian tubes are usually diagnosed with a hysterosalpingogram (HSG).

The most common cause of blocked fallopian tubes is pelvic inflammatory disease other causes can be due to endometriosis or previous abdominal surgery or appendix.

Fallopian tubes are very fragile structures and depending on the type of blockage you may be offered surgery to help unblock them.

The success of any surgery is dependent on how damaged the fallopian tube is. If surgery works, a couple will be able to go on and have one or more ‘spontaneous’ conceptions, without the need for any further invasive treatments. Unfortunately, a few women who undergo surgery find that their tubes become blocked again.
