COGI update IVF risks

IVF/ICSI, still high risk procedures.

Dr Skupski reminded everyone at the COGI conference 2011 that fertility treatment is still a high risk procedure. Six deaths have been directly linked to IVF in the Netherlands and 17 deaths occurred as a result of complications during pregnancy after IVF. The Netherlands keeps a very good medical record of patients and therefore this country was chosen as an example. However, it is expected that the risk is similarly high across Europe. In his opinion, this is clearly under-reported, and similar figures are expected to exist in other countries.

What are the risks to be aware of?

For baby

The major risks for the babies are low birth weight linked to multiple pregnancies.

Reassuring data was published by Dr Carson in 2010, confirming that at least until the age of 3, children born of IVF did not present learning difficulties. However ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), Asthma and childhood cancers have all been found to increase in children born as a result of IVF.

For the female

By far, the most common IVF complication is OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome) which occurs in 8-23% in a mild form and 2-10% in severe form. These variations in numbers are linked to the variations of definition across clinics, but also different protocols used in different clinics. The consequences of OHSS are typically haemorrhage following cyst rupture, venous thrombo-embolism, and hydrothorax.

On the other hand, Dr Kallen presented reassuring data on maternal cancer following IVF/ICSI. The only cancer which appears to be increased is ovarian cancer however it may be linked with infertility rather than the treatment.

Whilst our fertility experts at DuoFertility wouldn't want to discourage couples from considering IVF if it is an option available to them, the advanced monitoring service that DuoFertility provides can help couples to maximise their natural chances of conception? and avoid invasiveness and instrusiveness of the IVF procedure. Our success rates so far have been very encouraging. Our research has shown the 12 month pregnancy rate for DuoFertility was higher than that of a cycle of IVF for every age-group below 45.
