Cervix Position

When used with other ovulation signs such as cervical mucus quality and body basal temperature, checking the position of your cervix can be a useful fertility clue if you are trying to conceive. The cervix is the lower, narrow region of the uterus that meets the upper wall of the vagina, as indicated in the image to the right.

How do I check my cervix position?

Wash your hands thoroughly and ensure your nails are trimmed to ensure you don't catch the delicate tissue of the cervix. Insert your clean middle finger into your vagina up to your middle knuckle, or further until you can feel your cervix with your fingertip.

What are the different positions of the cervix?

Your cervix will change position during your cycle, under the influence of oestrogen. During the days when you are not fertile your cervix is low, firm and closed and feels like end of your nose. As you approach ovulation and are at your most fertile days, your cervix will feel Soft, High and Open and Wet (known as SHOW). After ovulation, your cervix will revert to its low and closed position. Checking the position of your cervix is not as easy as checking the quality of your mucus, but it can be a useful fertility clue.

For the majority of your menstrual cycle, your cervix will be in a “closed” position because there is no egg ready for fertilisation. In addition, by closing your cervix when you are not fertile, your body minimises the risk of infections reaching the uterus. The cervix only opens during the fertile phase of the cycle to allow sperm to reach the uterus and the Fallopian tubes where they might meet the egg.

What if I can’t reach my cervix?

Try using a different position such as squatting, or with one leg raised on a chair. If you can't feel your cervix on a particular day of your cycle, try again a few days later.
