Getting Pregnant

The ovary? has two main functions: the production of hormones to regulate your cycle and the production of eggs. Women are only ever capable of producing a finite number of eggs over their reproductive lives and these are produced by the ovarian follicles according to a cyclical pattern?, not continuously like sperm?.

During the seventh month of pregnancy, a baby girl (foetus?) has approximately six million ovarian follicles, while at birth the very same baby girl will only have two million follicles left. By the time the girl in question reaches adolescence and the age of menarche (first period), the number of ovarian follicles will have fallen again to about 400,000. During a woman’s reproductive lifetime, less than 500 ovarian follicles will achieve ovulation.

Unlike oocytes (eggs), sperm is produced in very large quantities. It takes about 2-3 months for sperm to develop within the testicle. They then migrate slowly (spending several days) along the epididymis (a tube) in order to reach full motility and feconding capacity.

Each ejaculation can contain up to 300 million sperm, but during love-making only about one million (less than 1%) will make it as far as the cervix?, and only 200-300 will meet the egg in the Fallopian tubes? (about one in a million). DuoFertility may be able to increase your chances of conceiving by accurately identifying when you are ovulating.
